Could you survive without social media?

Social media is often the first thing we wake up to in the morning and the last thing we see before we go to sleep. The habit is so routine and subconsciously ingrained into our lives that it’s a lil’ creepy, and unsurprisingly I’m no different.

Statistics project 2.77 billion social media users in 2019 and figures will continue to grow exponentially. As we all know, the possibilities of social media are endless and ever-evolving. But, is our heavy reliance on social media to connect and stay updated with others almost every waking hour really necessary?

As an avid consumer of social media, I’ve found myself guilty in this position countless times, checking my phone up to an average of 120 times a day (calculated with the Checky app, in my attempt to cut down social media usage).

My large figure is most-likely attributed to:
– constantly messaging friends to see what they’re up to and more often than not, we find ourselves texting in classes we’re pretending to pay attention in
– sending snaps to keep them Snapchat streaks 🔥, we so compulsively nurture, alive
– scrolling through the void of Instagram

Slightly ashamed at my potential social media addiction, I jumped onto Google like any other average modern day person would, to determine if “it was normal”. To my surprise, one article I stumbled upon revealed that the majority of millennials check their phones up to 150 times a day, and the potential reason for this.

Moreover, the question still stands, could you live without social media?
Again, I turned to the internet in search for answers and the general consensus from articles and videos indicated short-term struggles in initially trying to get off the grid, but life changing benefits in the long-term.

Could you live without social media?
Or are you those rare few who don’t use social media?

  1. I personally try to maintain a some what smaller social media presence purely because I’m still an avid believer of living in the now. But……… in saying this I do also find myself floating back onto Instagram so see what aesthetically pleasing lives and images I can come across. The development of technology is getting faster and faster so it’ll be interesting to see what we’ll be using in just a few years time.

    1. I think I’m with you on this one, I also find myself going to Instagram to see how different other people’s lives are and finding pleasure in viewing aesthetically pleasing photos. However, it does also seem like Instagram is overrun with sponsored posts and product placements. It definitely will be interesting to see how this evolves over time!

  2. I don’t think I would be able to live my ‘normal’ life without social media. I’ve tried deleting Facebook in the past and have ended up missing out on birthday parties and other invites to events because of it. Living without social media definitely gives you a real sense of FOMO too!

    1. I’ve tried in the past too, especially during exam period to help with my priorities, but it never goes well either for me! Even more so, when you use social media to connect with your friends/family.

  3. I’ve definitely fallen victim to constantly checking social media, and I’d definitely be a bit nervous to start tracking my habits and seeing how much time I spend on each platform! I challenged myself a few weeks back to delete Instagram for a few days to see how I would feel without it – surprisingly I didn’t miss it that much! While I brought it back it certainly felt nice not to have a constant stream of activity to deal with, keeping up with everyone can be exhausting sometimes.

    1. Glad I’m not the only one! Social media is like a black hole, but I often find turning off notifications for social media helps a lot, if there’s something urgent I often leave my texts/calls on anyway!

  4. I would be a lot more productive (with study for example) if I spent less time on social media. It is a big waste of a day and breaks can go from 10 minutes to 45 minutes in the blink of an eye. I guess we are reluctant not to go off of it because of FIFO – fear of missing out – but we are losing hours in the day when we could spend that time doing so many other things!

    1. I couldn’t agree more with you Alex, I’ve also noticed more productivity in those rare occasions where I’ve run out of data and can’t jump on social media and the amount of time it frees up is unbelievable!
